Master Programme provides young professionals with technical and managerial knowledge in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) sector and with
intercultural competencies. Both aspects are equally important when taking up leadership positions in the renewable energy sector and to work effectively in the the framework of international cooperation.
Countries in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region face a change in energy policy due to the depleting resources of fossil fuels, the rising prices, and growing demand.
Sustainable energy supply will remain the most crucial challenge of the Arab region for the coming decades and also a main focus in developing cooperation. Experience shows, there is a lack of energy experts being familiar not only with technological knowledge, but also with the culture, language and politics of both sides.
Two Universities – the University of Kassel and the Cairo University – in cooperation with institutions and companies in the renewable energy sector have combined their expertise to design an attractive Master Programme to guarantee an excellent education for young experts to meet the needs of a sustainable energy supply. Students follow this 20 months programme at three different locations.

Cooperation of two Universities
The programme is run by two Universities – the University of Kassel
and the Cairo University
- in cooperation with institutions and companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) sector. Both universities bring to the programme profound expertise in research and development and capacity building in the field of RE&EE.
University of Cairo
Cairo University (CU) was established in Giza in 1908 and currently includes 43 faculties and institutes. Cairo University is currently serving more than 200,000 students and employs about 7000 faculty members and 4000 teaching and research assistants. The Faculty of Engineering (FECU) was founded in 1816 and moved to its current location in 1905 and became part of CU in 1935. FECU is among the top ranked engineering institutes in the region and includes 15 scientific departments and programs, 15 independent business units and research centres, and occupies 105,000 square meters in Giza plus a new 90,000 m2 centre on the Sheikh Zayed campus.
The Faculty of Engineering has more than 900 faculty members, 14 thousand undergraduate students and 3000 graduate students. Over 55,000 engineers have graduated in different engineering disciplines. FECU plays a major role in establishing other engineering schools locally and regionally.

Pathways to Higher Education is an international initiative located at the Cairo University which is not explicitly linked to RE & EE. However, the initiative provides valuable information and resources on intercultural learning in Higher Education. Therefore, its experience will be used for enriching the Master’s programme by training faculty members in culturally competent teaching methods.
University of Kassel
The University of Kassel was founded 1971 as a reform university with 2000 international students out of a total of 18,000 students. They employ 320 professors and 2,100 staff and are representative of a medium-sized, interdisciplinary university with a research-oriented programme that focuses on the Engineering, Natural and Social Sciences. Several departments have a focus on environmental issues and renewable energies and energy efficiency.
For the past thirty years the University of Kassel’s Institut für Elektrische Energietechnik (IEE) has been working in the field of RE&EE. The institute is organised into three research and development (R&D) divisions related to the RE&EE:

“Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik” (ISET) , who is one of the major German research institutes for renewable energies and is also located close to the university in Kassel.

Experiences in Capacity Building for RE&EE at Cairo University
The department of Engineering at Cairo University looks back on a long tradition of postgraduate diploma concerning renewable energy applications. 10-15 Master of Science theses per year in RE&EE are prepared covering problems in the field of Photovoltaic, Solar Thermal Systems, Fuel Cells, Wind Power generation and Biomass, as well as in Green Building Architecture. The department regularly offers advanced courses in RE&EE taught by specialized internal staff and external experts from the relevant cooperating institutions and authorities working in the field of RE&EE. The close cooperation will be extended as required by implementing the first exclusive master programme for RE&EE in Egypt exemplary for the target region. Experiences in Capacity Building for RE&EE at University of Kassel
European Master in Renewable Energy, Programme of the European Renewable Energy Centre (EUREC), Brussels
EUREC Agency is the initiator and coordinating agency of the postgraduate programme "European Master in Renewable Energy". The European Master in RE is directed towards engineers that want to specialise in one of the renewable energy technologies, such as wind energy, biomass energy, photovoltaics, solar building technology or hybrid systems. The course has been set up to satisfy the growing industry demand for renewable energy engineers and is operated in close cooperation with renewables companies.
This Master’s course on renewable energy is organised as a 3-semester programme, with core and specialised universities working together to implement the programme. The University of Kassel is offering a specialisation on hybrid systems at the department “Rationelle Energiewandlung” (Efficient Energy Conversion, IEE-RE) working closely together with other departments at Kassel University and with the “Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik” (ISET).
The EUREC Programme started in 2004 and its accreditation is scheduled for 2008.
Master in Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (REE), University of Kassel
The degree programme aims at giving students the possibility of gaining superior competence and qualifications in the field of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency in an interdisciplinary Master’s degree. The degree curriculum spans a period of three terms (18 months), including completion of a final thesis. It is opened to students with a prior university degree in a technical or scientific discipline.

The University of Kassel meets the need of regional and national companies working in the field of RE&EE by offering several in service training programmes. Entry requirement is similar to the applied master programme a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Physics disciplines. So fare, there are three directions for specialisation:
Apart from the Master’s course programmes, Kassel has several projects which already aiming to improve the capacity building of RE&EE in the target region. (s. Annex 2)
The Programme is directed to young professionals with work experience and a high motivation to contribute to introducing a sustainable energy supply and to the development in the Arab region in general, which includes a keen interest in the other culture and language.
The participants should aspire to make a career in the international energy sector.
Minimum requirements are:
bachelor degree (seven semesters) in engineering, natural sciences, economics, social sciences (minimum grade “good”)
two years working experience
fluent in English
Non-native English speaking students who did not follow a university degree conducted in English must sit for either one of the following exams and obtain the following grades:
GER: C1 minimum
TOEFL: minimum 79 internet-based, 213 computer-based, 550 paper-based
IELTS: 6 minimum
Cambridge Advanced Exam in English: B minimum
Cambridge Proficiency Exam in English: C minimum
TOEIC: Valid as well, equivalent to TOEFL
If you are accepted for the course, you have to organize different Visa for your stay abroad. All people need a Visa for the countries which are not their home country.
The visa must cover the entire duration of the academic year and is a pre-condition for enrolment.

There are no Tuition Fees for the fist three runs of the Master Programme.
But there are service fees to pay at the Universities each semester as follows:
You need a W-LAN compatible notebook for your work during this programme. A notebook can easily be financed or leased within several months, if you haven’t your own.
The minimum operating system should be “Windows XP” so that it is possible to run different given simulation tools
